Industrial Risk – Urban and Spatial Planning, Organisation for planning and environmental protection of Thessaloniki, 2007-2008.
A decision making methodology that introduces the objectives of preventing major accidents from industrial installations and limiting the consequences of such accidents in land use planning is presented. The proposed methodology is suitable for assisting urban and spatial planning in the vicinity of hazardous installations and therefore covers the directions of Article 12 of SEVESO II directive of the European Commission and the requirements of the respective national legislation. Moreover, it is easy to use as it comprises of simple steps, can be incorporated in GIS-based tools and adapted in the particular circumstances, characteristics and perception about acceptable risk of local communities. Although, it is structured over a consequence-based approach for the assessment of risk posed from of SEVESO II installations related to potential major accidents, with minor modifications it can be used with risk-based methods, too.
