In Greece, to date, there has not been a detailed emission inventory database from transport. The Greek Ministry for the Environmental Physical Planning and Public Works has recently financed an "Emission Inventory System from Transport" (EIST). The EIST aims to be the first detailed and well structured national emission database from transport (road, rail, air and sea transport and also off-road activities), focusing on the best input datasets available and the most advanced pollutant emission algorithms.
The EIST consists of a Database (DBS), Air Pollutants Emissions Models (APEM), Graphical User Interfaces (GUI) for the presentation of all input and resulting data and a custom Geographical Information System (GIS) for spatial analysis and presentation of the system data.
The DBS (Oracle 8.1.0.6 Enterprise Server) is the "heart" of the EIST. It stores all input data such as fleet and traffic composition, traffic, railway, aircraft and shipping activities and also the resulting emissions from all transport sectors. The structure of the database allows different emission "scenarios" for different year related data or for different emission case studies.
Finally, the GIS application creates custom maps with data stored in the DBS. It is noteworthy that the custom application that was developed not only shows the emissions on their sources but also performs advanced spatial analysis for geographical aggregations.
